Connecting one million users
August 18, 2024 / Alex Linton
Over 1 million people are using Session.
That’s a million people connecting with their friends, family, colleagues, and peers with the privacy they need to keep themselves and their conversations safe.
People have found many amazing and wonderful ways to use Session, whether it’s organising activism, chatting to a loved one, or just saving a private note for yourself. No matter how you use Session, your privacy is protected.
This is the simple premise at the core of Session’s mission as a decentralised, trustless protocol. Your privacy is paramount—and it always will be.
In the current day, privacy itself is under threat. Whether it’s due to changing legislation or the growing surveillance technology complex, maintaining basic personal privacy is becoming more difficult. Privacy should not have strings attached. Simple, decentralised solutions are required to protect people’s privacy as our lives become more digitised.
Insecure central identifiers, such as phone numbers, should be deprecated. Central storage of people’s personal data should be avoided. Privacy-preserving protocols should be adopted, maintained, and upgraded.
Big tech is not going to disappear on its own. Eventually, it will be replaced by something more authentic, user-centric, and participatory.
1 million is a moment to celebrate. A lot of people have contributed countless hours to achieving this goal. It’s a lot of users, especially for a decentralised messaging app—perhaps more than any other has ever reached. Things haven’t always come easy, nor have they been simple, but it’s achieved thanks to the persistence of every single contributor and community member.
The mission continues. There are more possibilities. Session is just getting started.
